History: Gail Eastman celebrates defeat of Democracy

From OC Weekly 7-26-12:

I always knew Anaheim councilwoman Gail Eastman was a tool, or at best a deluded bat, especially after she deemed herself a historian and wrote an execrable book for children that purported to tell the history of my home town but bowdlerized everything about it when not telling outright lies.

Gail Eastman

Gail Eastman

But now that Gail Eastman has committed one of the most HILARIOUS political faux pauxs in recent memory, let's call her what she is: a pendeja.

On Tuesday, while Anaheim continued to burn, Gail Eastman posted a message to a private Internet message board that thanked the riots for allowing her and her cohorts on the Anaheim City Council to subvert democracy.

As first reported by the No Jordan Brandman blog (which, quick aside: YES on No Brandman for City Council, and YES for a muckraking Anaheim blog--about damn time!), Eastman wrote on the message board just after attending a City Council meeting that it was "finally quiet in the hood" and proceeded to express gratitude for the riots. The council meeting was ended short due to the riots, which meant that two critical agenda items weren't heard. One dealt with allowing Anaheim residents to vote on a multi-million-dollar subsidy to hotel developers; another would've put the issue of creating ward districts for city council elections instead of the current at-large system on the ballot as well. Activists want the two, to create a more participatory Anaheim electorate. Eastman and her fellow developer puppets on the council, Harry Sidhu and Kris Murray, are opposed.

But the riots happened, which meant the council couldn't place those initiatives on the November ballot, which means it ain't going to happen, which means Gail Eastman is ecstatic. "The bonus now is that a threat of seeing either the [subsidy]
issue or districting on the November ballot is past," Gail Eastman enthused. "In spite of how it happened, it was a big time win for all who opposed seeing that placed on the November ballot...Tonight we celebrate a win with no shots fired!"

This, after Anaheim police fired rubber bullets at protestors--CLUELESS!

The comment sparked a furor in Anaheim's political classes, and a half-assed apology that Gail Eastman just posted on Facebook (with the convenient excuse that "it was late, I was exhausted"), although she seems to think that the furor is about her use of the word "hood" and not her bullshit politics.

Worst of all? Gail Eastman is the only councilmember who doesn't live in Anaheim Hills. She should know better--but that she doesn't tells you all you need to know about how clueless Anaheim leadership truly is. BOOT THE BUMS OUT

Anaheim is hit with legal claims

Police actions escalated tension and put bystanders in harm's way in the moments after officers shot and killed an unarmed man who had run from them, according to legal claims filed against the city.

Eight residents of Anna Drive filed claims, seeking $500,000 each for physical injuries, emotional trauma, violations of constitutional protections against unreasonable search and seizure and other damages. The claims were filed Friday and Tuesday, city officials said.

An officer-involved shooting on Anna Drive near La Palma Avenue in July left one man dead.

The city has 45 days to respond; if it denies the claims, the residents may file lawsuits.

"All claims will be seriously looked at," said Mayor Tom Tait, who had not seen the claims as of Tuesday.

Controversial Anaheim Deputy Police Chief Retires

By Gabriel San Roman

At a ceremony held earlier today, Deputy Police Chief Craig Hunter retired from the Anaheim Police Department. His career with the force dates back 30 years, to 1982, and saw him rise from the ranks to the top brass. More recently in 2010, he made an unsuccessful bid as a candidate for Orange County sheriff losing to Sandra Hutchens.

Hunter was still designated as Deputy Police Chief as he retired today, though Raul Quezada was appointed to that very same position more than two months ago in October. Very quietly around that time Hunter was on special assignment at the City Manager's office, a duty that he also no longer serves.

As Anaheim's long, hot summer roiled into massive protests, a 44-page leaked "Incident Action Report" listed Hunter as an 'Incident Commander' for the city's supposed 'hot zones' leading up to the much criticized militarized police presence on July 29 that gripped the city.

Prior to becoming Deputy Chief, Hunter was at the center of accusations by former Anaheim police officer and whistleblower Steve Nolan. A nine-year veteran at the time, including two years with the department's gang unit, Nolan broke the code of silence in 1995. He contended that he witnessed on numerous occasions the beating of Latino juvenile suspects.

Gail Eastman's discrepancies in her "apology"

Jill Kanzler, president of SOAR, Kris Murray, Gail Eastman, and Michelle Lieberman.

Statement:

To everyone who sent an email and/or came out to City Hall to support the
Council tonight. It's finally quiet in the hood and I've had time to
collect my thoughts.

There was a time during the meeting whe we were being told things were
escalating outside and our PD was only able to just hold out until back up from
County and other cities arrived, that I looked at all my friends in the chamber
audience and regretted my earlier plea to show up and show support. I am most
grateful that you all were there for the quiet show of support and happy that
 everyone was safe.

It appears to have been quiet now for almost an hour so I trust we will all get
a good nights sleep. The bonus now is that a threat of seeing either the TOT
issue or districting on the November ballot is past. In spite of how it happened, it was a big time win for all who opposed seeing that placed on the November ballot.

We could still be asked to vote on both issues in the future if 15% of the registered voters in the city sign a petition
requesting it. We may also be facing a recall if some of tonights speakers
follow through on their threats, but that will be a fight for another day.
Tonight we celebrate a win with no shots fired!

Thanks my friends for standing with us!

Gail

Apology:

"Shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning, following a contentious and emotional city council meeting, I sent an email to the Colony residents' email group thanking my neighbors for attending the city council meeting," she wrote. "In the email, I used a common phrase that was perceived as inappropriate and insensitive in light of the serious issues going on in our city right now. Very simply, it was late, I was exhausted and it was the wrong choice of words. For that, I sincerely apologize to those who were offended."

Gail Eastman's supposed APOLOGY

-Gail Eastman, riding off with our democracy, pictured above-

"Shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning, following a contentious and emotional city council meeting, I sent an email to the Colony residents' email group thanking my neighbors for attending the city council meeting," she wrote. "In the email, I used a common phrase that was perceived as inappropriate and insensitive in light of the serious issues going on in our city right now. Very simply, it was late, I was exhausted and it was the wrong choice of words. For that, I sincerely apologize to those who were offended."

Her comments were not perceived as inappropriate or insensitive, they WERE inappropriate and insensitive. Then she goes on to make excuses such as "it was late," and "I was exhausted." I don't know about my readers but when I am tired and exhausted I don't make inflammatory comments towards disenfranchised individuals.

I think Gail Eastman needs to RESIGN along with Kris Murray and Harry Sidhu! Gail Eastman and the 'Giveaway 3' only have a record of representing the interests of their connected and wealthy contributors.
